Biographies

  • The first biography of Anandi was written in 1888 by Caroline Wells Healey Dall, a distinguished American woman who had come to know Anandi personally. The book touches on the high points of Anandi’s American life, giving readers a sense of how she was received and perceived by Americans. It also contains information about Anandi’s family, childhood and upbringing that Anandi herself provided to Dall. This is the only biography (to date) that is written in English.
  • Mrs. Kashibai Kanitkar wrote a biography in Marathi in the late 1800s. The second edition was published in 1912. This biography relies on the Dall book (which had been sent to India) and on direct input from Gopal Joshee (Anandi’s husband).
  • An updated and revised biography in Marathi was written by Anjali Kirtane in 1997. She also produced a short dramatized documentary.

Letters

  • A book containing copies and transcriptions of letters was published in India in 1997. It contains a selection of letters from and to Anandi.
  • Letters in the private collection of the Carpenter family. These provide a rich trove for the period before Anandi came to America.
